Course Description
Although open since 1988 only, San Lorenzo has built up an enviable reputation as a course you must play if you are in the Algarve. Exclusivity obviously plays a part, but the sheer magnificence of San Lorenzo and its rating among the top three courses in Europe prove that attention to detail and meticulous maintenance make it the show-piece of the region.

British comedian Jimmy Tarbuck has regularly held his Golf Classic here, bringing sports personalities and show business celebrities from the United Kingdom, such as Henry Cooper, Jasper Carrott, Tim Brooke-Taylor, plus many more who have all returned year after year. For several years, the British Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship finals were held on the San Lorenzo course. Both Tony Jacklin and Mickey Walker have accompanied the finalists here.

Perhaps the most attractive element associated with this course is the way in which it blends into the natural environment of the area. Of several courses in the region, it shares the splendid setting and beauty of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. Flora and fauna are exquisite, making the course a delight to both golfer and casual visitor.

It is a par 72, 6,238 metres in length, and it has some holes of exquisite beauty, mainly those near Ria Formosa, such as the par-3 5th, that provides a glimpse at the Ria as well as two par 4's, 6th and 7th, that hug the edges of the wetlands. According to some of the best players in the country, the par-5 8th is the most difficult hole, because it requires three perfect shots to reach the green.

However, the last two holes follow the philosophy of the architects - as the case of the 8th - and an immense lake is always in play on both of them.

Unfortunately, San Lorenzo has not been so well-known as a championship golf course as it deserves to be, because by its owner choice it has not yet been possible to hold a competition of international prestige there.

Tony's Comment
Being ranked number eight in Europe is comment enough about the test of golf that this course demands. Guests of the Dona Filipa Hotel can enjoy easy and reasonably priced access to this wonderful course.
However, if you are not staying in Dona Filipa this does not rule you out. The green fees are fairly high, but if you wish to play here please let me know and I will do my best to help.

Directions
20kms west of Faro airport on the quinta do Lago estate. There are three main roads to the coast from the village of Almancil. When you arrive in Almancil, on the EN 125, proceed to Quinta do Lago. The course is properly signposted and will be on your left.
